I WRITE in support of John Ainsworth with reference to his recent letter regarding climate change and affordable energy for all (Postbag, October 20).

The current government have done everything in their power to undermine the renewable energy industry in the UK.

While providing tax relief for fossil fuels, they have cut incentives to the renewable energy industry at every turn.

The loss of tax relief to Community Energy Schemes is one such ruling that has effectively put an end to local projects.

Other schemes that provided energy conservation to low income households have been scrapped. Restrictions to onshore wind turbines have all but finished the industry. People living close to wind farms rightly have the ability to object to their installation.

This right is not allowed for people who don’t want fracking on their doorstep.

The latest scheme is to increase the rateable value of business and schools that have installed solar panels on their roofs.

Caroline Lucas of the Green Party instigated an early day motion which received cross party support to ask ministers to review this action and call on the Valuation Office Agency to alter this ruling.

I wrote to our own MP Rebecca Pow about the situation. I received a prompt and full reply and she offered to follow the decision closely and attempt to ensure the right support for those who are affected.

Months after the decision to go ahead with Hinkley C it will be interesting to see what decision will be made on the Swansea Tidal Lagoon that will enable renewable energy to be produced from the Bristol Channel for over 100 years.

Considering this government track record I’m not hopeful.
