AT this time of year our thoughts are always with our families, friends and relatives.

It’s the time of the year we think of others, hoping and wishing them much health and happiness. As always there will be many people working hard day and night over the festive period, to ensure our safety and protection.

My thoughts will be with those working in our local communities, police stations, hospitals and voluntary and charity organisations.

On behalf of all the local communities of Avon and Somerset, I want to say how incredibly grateful we are to all those keeping us safe over the winter and for the sacrifices they make for us.

As I write my final column for 2016, it gives me the opportunity to pause and reflect on another eventful year. Time to reflect on what’s taken place over the past year and also to look to the future with hope and confidence at what the New Year might bring. I’ve no doubt there will be both opportunities and challenges in 2017, but I know these will be embraced with the vigour and enthusiasm that I’ve seen from so many, so often.

For me, this year has been another especially memorable year, winning the area’s second Police and Crime Commissioner election. I would like to take the time once again to thank all those residents who voted for me and also to those who have supported me and my team over the course of this year.

To be able to return to the role and represent the views of local people in policing is a real privilege and one I am grateful for every day.

If you’re still looking for that special gift, wanting to make a real difference or already thinking about your New Year’s resolutions, have you considered the many opportunities to get involved in policing and helping your local community to be safe and feel safe?

In my experience stronger communities are more resilient communities and this is thanks to the commitment of our Neighbourhood Watches, Community Speed Watches, Volunteer Police Cadets, Special Constables and all those who selflessly volunteer their time. If you’d like to find out more about getting involved please visit the Constabulary website.

Finally, I would like to thank all the Halcon Little Litter Pickers and the Taunton Street Pastors for their hard-work over 2016, as well as everyone involved in the One Team, police cadets and all those who have helped their community this year. Including those I’ve met at my Pride Awards from Taunton and surrounding areas such as Lucy Dalley, Barbara Nadin, Cadet Leaders Mark Bell, Gail Smythe and PC Martha Spikes.

Whatever the New Year has in store for each of us, I want you to know I will continue to work hard for you and I hope that you in turn will take the opportunity to communicate with me to ensure I truly represent you as your Police and Crime Commissioner.

With warmest wishes for a peaceful Christmas and New Year.
