A FEW years ago on the the Devon coast I used to see notices asking us not to feed the gulls.
The notice was politely phrased, explaining the reasons why the birds should not be fed.
It has clearly been thought that such notices were inadequate, however, and feeding gulls has now been made a criminal offence in East Devon.
The maximum fine is £2,500, but offenders are more likely to receive an on-the-spot fine of £80.
Recent articles in the County Gazette have drawn attention to the nuisance from gulls in Taunton.
Should we follow East Devon’s example and get serious about controlling these birds? Or are they so well established here that we just have to put up with them?

One downside of making it illegal to feed the gulls is that it would also stop us feeding ducks, because as soon as we start feeding ducks the gulls come along too.
