DO you care where your local government pension monies are invested?
Not long ago, the Department for Communities and Local Government was intent on preventing local authorities from investing pension monies in arms companies or for foreign policy reasons.
However, in June 2017, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, together with some other NGOs challenged this intention in court and the judge ruled the Government had acted for an improper purpose in seeking to use pension law to pursue its own foreign and military policy.
Hence, local government pension schemes are now free to act in accordance with their members’ wishes.
So local government pension scheme participants are free to challenge investment of their pension fund in companies they do not wish to support, and it is up to them to exercise that right.
