LIKE many other people I am sure, I am appalled at the levels of online abuse reported, which seems a sad reflection of aspects of our society.
Amnesty International research shows that women in particular face a barrage of abuse, ranging from harassment and intimidation to threats of serious violence, if they express an opinion online.
Particular triggers are comments related to politics, the EU, race, gender or sexual harassment/ rape.
Female journalists, politicians and rights activists are most frequently targeted, and for young women and those from a minority ethnic group the effect is further magnified.
Anyone with teenage daughters active on social media has reason to be concerned at the thought of what they might experience for simply expressing an opinion.
Amnesty is campaigning against “Toxic Twitter”, calling on Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, to enforce rules on hateful conduct and abuse and make Twitter a safe space for women.
