I RECENTLY happened to pick up a very colourful Taunton Visitor Guide, which showed what could be described as 'a lovely town'.

But the image given is far from reality.

Our town, I am afraid to say, is disgusting. The streets are filthy, vacant shop doorways are filthy and smell of urine.

Don't we employ street cleaners any more? And why aren't are main streets washed down?

The Tone Bridge is in desperate need of a repaint and many pavements need replacing.

For a County Town, Taunton is shameful. It is very tired looking and needs modernising.

If we are to attract new businesses and tourists, we must do more to make our town more attractive.

We must be about the only town in Britain that doesn't have its main shopping area pedestrianised. Why wasn't this done when the top of East Reach was closed and they had plenty of opportunity to do so?

What are our council leaders doing, don't they live in the real world, can't they see what's going on in their own town, don't they ever come out of their 'comfort zone', ie their offices, walk around the town and see for themselves?

Maybe they are ashamed to and just bury their heads in the sand.
