FOLLOWING in the footsteps of Bristol, Frome and Oxford, Green Doors comes to Taunton.

Local voluntary group Taunton Transition Town is looking for people who are willing to open up their homes, community buildings, schools or businesses to show others how they have managed to make them more eco-friendly.

Group member Chrissie Godfrey said: “Over the weekend of 25-27 May 2012, we want to give people the opportunity to learn first-hand what different types of eco-improvements can be like and what benefits they have brought.

“This could be anything from insulation to renewable energy generation, rainwater harvesting to low carbon heating, brilliant composting or vegetable gardening. If it’s eco, it’s in!”

People interested in taking part will be asked to do three simple things: 1. Open their house, garden, community building or business for a few hours over the period Friday, May 25 to Sunday, May 27 2. Show visitors what they have done inside or outside, and be available to answer questions about their improvements.

3. Have a hand out available for any particular information they are keen to pass on. Print costs will be covered for this.

Details of what will be available will feature on an online map and a printed leaflet.

Taunton Transition Town members will provide plenty of support to help people plan how they can take part.

Chrissie, who lives in the Priory area, said: “I’m putting my hand up for this.

“We had Solar PV panels installed last year and I am keen to show people what they are like and how they work.”

Architect Andy Humphreys, who recently bought a 1970’s house in Obridge, is also keen to take part.

He said: “We have installed a log burning stove, put in cavity wall insulation and put solar panels on the roof too.

“Being in the business, I wasn’t daunted by any of this, but I am keen to show people how simple it can be to make energy efficient alterations to a home.”

Taunton Transition Town are holding a drop-in on Saturday 31 March between 10.30am and 12.30pm at Friends Meeting House, Bath Place, for people to find out more.

They will also be demonstrating their new Thermal Imaging camera, and presenting the results of a detailed survey of Taunton’s potential for increased energy efficiency.
