IF you feel you’re spending a small fortune on heating oil for your home or business there could be just the answer.

The Renewable Heat Incentive is a Government scheme paying a premium to the owner of a biomass boiler for generating and using renewable heat.

Currently, the scheme is in place for the commercial sector and will become payable to the domestic market in the summer of next year.

Two domestic homes using one biomass boiler for heating and hot water will be classified as commercial under the RHI scheme.

The RHI pays annual, inflation-linked payments for 20 years to the owner of the biomass boiler.

This, in addition to savings in fuel, makes for a great return on your initial investment.

An average biomass installation will cost about £50,000, which should be paid back inside five years, leaving 15 years of the remaining term to receive annual RHI payments of approximately £8,000-£9,000.

So, over the term remaining, at the lowest estimate, that would be £120,000 and your expensive oil has been replaced by wood pellet, which is about half the price of oil. Figures may slightly differ.

Domestic installations can take place before the Government introduces the domestic RHI – each home owner would receive a Renewable Heat Premium Payment of £950. Terms apply.
