What is a repetitive strain injury? RSI is a general term used to describe the pain from muscles, nerves and tendons caused by repetitive movement and overuse. These injuries include golfers' or tennis elbow, tendonitis, carpal tunnel and more.

The exact causes differ slightly but pain and disability usually arises as a result of certain tissue changes occurring from overuse. This may include swelling, release of pain mediators and disorganised tissue repair.

Symptoms of RSI may take months, even years, to appear. Initially, only a slight ache may be felt. As the problem gets worse, increase in pain while performing the repeated activity is more marked.

Common triggers include repetitive motions such as typing or drilling in the workplace. Other contributory factors include awkward postures, poor working technique, lack of rest and badly set up workstations.

Common signs and symptoms include:

*Muscle or joint pain.

*Tender muscles or joints.

*Throbbing muscles or joints.

*Pins and needles in the hand or arm.

*Numbness in the hand or arm.

*Loss of strength in the hand.

*Loss of sensation in the hand.

Osteopaths are skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of medical conditions, with specialist training in muscular skeletal dysfunctions.

After a full case history has been taken, a thorough examination will be performed involving orthopedic and neurological testing to identify the exact tissue causing pain.

Once the tissue causing pain has been identified, a biomechanical examination is performed to identify any predisposing and maintaining factors such as posture and poor movement patterns.

Treatment will usually involve a range of techniques including soft tissue massage, manipulation or mobilisations, stretching techniques, exercise and lifestyle advice. The aim of treatment is to accelerate repair by improving blood flow and improving biomechanics such as posture.

How can you prevent RSI?

There are many simple changes that can be done to prevent RSI. These include: · Split your work up and change from one task to another, rather than concentrating on one job all day.

· Take 10 minute breaks at least hourly, stand up and do some stretches. · Learn to touch type if you work on a keyboard. This uses all your fingers and enables you to look upwards instead of down.

· Ensure your workstation is set up correctly Why not take advantage of John Wyn Parry's free consultation or a free back check with any of our osteopaths and chiropractor to discuss your symptoms and find out how osteopathy can help you.
