ACCORDING to NHS Direct, around 30% of people in England have high blood pressure, but many don’t know it.

If left untreated it can increase the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. Marlborough House acupuncturist Lori Hillman attended training to reduce high blood pressure simply and quickly using acupuncture.

The course was taught by Leilani Lea, director and founder of Barefoot Clinics, which runs free acupuncture clinics in remote, impoverished areas of the world, such as rural India and Nepal.

She has developed her techniques over 35 years and perfected them through treatment of thousands of people at her clinics.

The results for the patients treated on the day were extremely positive with one patient’s blood pressure reducing from 140/102 to 112/85, one reducing from 150/70 to 130/65 and another from 160/105 to 125/100.

Though these changes were very encouraging, longer lasting reductions in blood pressure are likely to require several treatments.

A clinical trial is now being undertaken to prove the efficacy of this treatment in the UK.

Lori has been involved in a successful clinical trial for acupuncture in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, and is committed to proving the benefit of oriental medicine to bring it in line with other western countries which have already embraced it in their health care service.
