By Joy Dyer, matron for 30 years at the Taunton Nuffield Hospital

What is Matron-led care?

Matron-led care places a matron at the centre of each hospital site where we are regarded as the glue that holds the whole team together.

What makes matron-led care different?

My personal view is ‘wherever a patient comes into contact with Nuffield Health I feel responsible for the standard of their care.

Holding someone’s hand, getting lunch for a patient’s visitor, even something as small as having a ready smile – these are all things that illustrate how we embrace the individual and family that comes into our care.’ How long have you been matron at Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital?

I started at the Nuffield 30 years ago on February 7, 1983. Then we had 28 beds and one theatre – now we have 41 beds and three theatres, as well as the endoscopy suite, two x-ray rooms and a suite of out-patient facilities.

What is your favourite part of the job?

My greatest passion is to provide customer care that exceeds expectations, but the importance of caring individually for patients is the same as it always was and the thing that still motivates me.
