HORDES of crowds flocked to the streets to mark the completion of a town centre enhancement scheme in Taunton, in the week of November 22, 1996.
Taunton Deane Mayor Jim Dunkley was one of the busiest men in the town on the day, attending as many events as possible. He took part in line dancing, had a ride on a classical motorbike, ate a medieval lunch, distributed trees to schoolchildren, and opened the heritage trail.
He said: "I met dozens and dozens of people from children to elderly folk and they indicated to me quite clearly that they were all pleased with the celebrations and the festivities.
"I really would like to congratulate and thank all the people, organisations and groups who gave so liberally of their time in providing such a magnificent range of entertainment.
"It was all an outstanding success, a wonderful and most enjoyable way to celebrate the completion of the scheme."
