A TAUNTON police officer who survived being shot when his attacker’s gun jammed grappled with another armed robber – almost 25 years later.

Insp Kevin Saunders, aged 54, even shouted at two passers-by to keep clear as he wrestled the gun away from the culprit.

He was personally commended by Chief Constable David Shattock for his courage, on the second award in his 29-year policing career.

The citation, which was read out in the week of December 13, 1996, said: “Although he was alone, Insp Saunders went up to the man and told him he intended to search him. As he began the search, the man put his hand behind the back and pulled out a black metallic gun.

“After a short struggle, the officer took possession of the weapon, which turned out to be a realistic imitation.”
