DULVERTON fire service received its Christmas presents a fortnight early - two shiny new vehicles.

The most unusual, a go-anywhere Austrian-built Pinzgaur costing £70,000, will take five firefighters and 160 gallons of water deep into wildest Exmoor and was delivered in the week of December 20, 1991.

Dulverton station officer Richard Stanbury, who leads the 14-strong team said: It really is very good, particularly as it has six-wheel drive, higher ground clearance and diff locks.

"We should be able to drive to most situations now in all winds and weathers.

"And where it will score over the Range Rover it replaces is in situations such as grass fires on the moor, which we should now be able to reach with water rather than trying to beat them out."

He received the keys from Somerset County Councillor John Edwards, who said: "Those two vehicles represent excellent news for Dulverton and a wide area of Exmoor. I am delighted that the fire station will keep two vehicles, both of them the latest and best available in this country."
