ALASTAIR Fothergill, series producer or the ground-breaking television series Planet Earth, spoke to pupils and parents at Wellington School.
Mixing anecdote and humour with images and video clips, the audience was both inspired and moved.
Responding to questions afterwards, Alastair Fothergill said that he thought it a moral imperative' to continue to produce programmes such as Planet Earth, and his current project Poles, in order to preserve as a record sights and sounds that in some cases are fast disappearing.
A school spokesman added: "While the evidence for global warming was now scientifically clear, he pointed out that there were still large areas of unspoilt wilderness and habitat and that these gave grounds for both optimism and action."
The lecture was the first in what headmaster Martin Reader hopes will be a series of talks.
The film Earth, based on the series Planet Earth, 40% of which is new footage, is released in Exeter and Wells in the week beginning December 7.
