The flat above the Fat Face store in Cheapside in Taunton town centre had smoke billowing out of the window.
Two fire engines and a hydraulic platform from Taunton were at the scene, following a call from a member of staff from the shop.
A fire service spokesman said: "The cause of the alarm was burnt toast in the neighbouring building."
