Batting lets Deane down

ANOTHER poor batting display cost Taunton Deane in their home fixture with Lansdown in Premier Two last Saturday.

They failed to bat their full allocation of 50 overs and and it cost them dear as the visitors comfortably reached their target of 179.

Skipper Ali Warren chose to take first knock on a hot, sunny day and started well, crashing the first ball of the match through the covers for four.

He posted a solid start of 26 with Sam Shaikh before the latter was bowled by former Kent player James Golding for 13.

Joe Pantling fell for a duck, lbw to the same bowler, but Phil Lewis took the score 50 before he was run out with Ed Warren falling lbw to Dorgan two balls later as Deane struggled to 51-4 off 16 overs. Jason Squire also failed to trouble the scorers as they slumped to 65-5 off 21 overs.

Ali Warren was sixth out for 44, lbw to Golding, but Keith Ford and the in-form Russell Jones then got their heads down to rally the score to 100 before the introduction of Ben Staunton saw Ford fall for 44.

Jones managed to reach his second half century of the season until he too fell to Staunton (3-6). The tail quickly subsided and the side were all out for an inadequate 179 in only 44.1 overs.

To clinch victory, the early removal of ex-Bath opener Staunton was a necessity but this was not to be as his patient 60 not out allowed the rest of the side to bat comfortably around him. An opening stand of 42 paved the way and despite two wickets from Lewis (2-36) which knocked the visitors back to 72-2, they were always in control.

Jack Leach and Nat Pepperell both picked up a wicket but Golding's 31 and 34 not out from Dorgan gave the visitors a comfortable six-wicket win in 48 overs.
