NEW enforcement rules are set to crack down on booze-fuelled anti-social behaviour in West Somerset.

Boozers who over indulge and cause trouble will be targeted with the help of police, the licensing authority and West Somerset Council.

The new Joint Enforcement Protocol was set to be adopted by West Somerset Council yesterday (Wednesday) and aims to put a lid on practices that could lead to antisocial behaviour, and make sure licensees have the support they need to enforce the law.

Minehead neighbourhood police inspector Carol Pearce, said: "West Somerset is the first across the county to adopt the agreement.

"It is a very positive step for the district council and the police to work more effectively together to support licensees in delivering the licensing legislation.

"In the future we will carry out joint licensing visits and spot checks, and have already started to do so."

The main objectives include the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, prevention of public nuisance and protection of children from harm.

Insp Pearce added: "Drinking has always been linked with antisocial behaviour for some people who over indulge.

"New practices will include making sure people who are drunk do not get served and ensure people are quiet when leaving the area.

"The main routes will be regularly patrolled by the police to reduce problems in the community and nuisance to the neighbours."

A spokesman for West Somerset Council said: "The act promotes four main objectives which are to prevent crime and disorder and to protect children while also ensuring public safety and preventing public nuisance.

"It seeks to unite the local government agencies and the police, all of whom have a role in enforcing licensing law.

"It aims to help businesses comply with legislation by resolving differences before enforcement becomes necessary where possible, and also to help identify any potential risk areas to safeguard the public."
