Children design their own play area
A PLAY area designed by the youngsters who will use it, should open in Taunton before the summer holidays.
The final designs are now being revealed following months of work with local schools.
Students from Trinity and Holway primary schools and Bishop Fox's Community School joined forces with architect Louise Baugh, a team from Barnardos and play equipment providers Proludic.
The £130,000 scheme, on public open space off Chestnut Drive, is being funded through grants from the unparished precept, developers' agreements and from Taunton Deane Council.
The young people designed their ideal play areas by drawing pictures, making models and taking inspiration from videos of equipment in use.
The equipment chosen ranges from a cableway, pod swing and girospiral to a climbing frame, canoe slide and football goal wall.
The under-fives will have a fenced play area with a sand base, cradle swings and an apparatus called runway to the stars.
Councillor Richard Lees, Executive Councillor for Leisure Services, said: "I am delighted to see this wonderful project coming to fruition, having involved young people right from the start to create this fabulous play idea.
"It is an amazing use of an area for youngsters to enjoy themselves and express themselves through play in an environment that is safe.
"It also demonstrates how we listen to young people and try to involve them in decision-making and to provide the amenities that they want."
