Jobs cull at Taunton college
Somerset College boss Rachel Davies
Somerset College boss Rachel Davies

STAFF at Somerset College, in Taunton, heard on Friday that scores of jobs are likely to go.

Bosses say the redundancies will help create "a more efficient organisation that can further invest in front line teaching and learning".

Most of the jobs are non-teaching support posts and service roles.

Mainstream teaching will not be affected.

Rachel Davies, principal and chief executive of Somerset College, said: "Our emphasis is on teaching and learning.

"The changes we are making are needed to focus on the skills agenda and on young people.

"Teaching quality is key and we will continue to give an outstanding learner experience to all our students.

"We are acting now to position ourselves clearly for the future skills needs of business and industry in Somerset and the region.

"Due to changes in government funding we are also stopping a small number of part time courses.

"We will honour our commitment to the students who may be affected.

"The Governors and I regret the need for this staffing review but it is essential for our future stability.

"We are doing everything we can to support our staff during this process.

"Consultation is underway between management, staff and unions on how to implement these changes to minimise the impact on College life."
