SHOPPERS in Wellington will be watching developments after the Co-operative Group agreed to buy the Somerfield supermarket chain in a £1.565billion deal.
Wellington has a Co-op food store, which has just undergone a £530,000 revamp, while a Somerfield is being built in High Street.
A Co-op spokeswoman said it was too early to discuss individual stores because the offer was conditional and awaiting regulatory approval.
The new-look Co-op, on Longforth Road, where there are ten new jobs, was launched at a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday.
Pupils from Beech Grove and St John's Primary Schools were presented with £100 for their schools by store manager Anthony Wright.
Work is well underway on a Somerfield store on the site of the former Kwik Save and car park following demolition of the previously derelict buildings.
Wiveliscombe contractor Stacey Construction is due to complete the project by the end of the year.
