Parks retain Green Flags

9:10pm Wednesday 23rd July 2008

VIVARY and Victoria Parks, in Taunton, and Wellington Park have retained their Green Flag status.

Wellington wins the flag, which recognises the best parks in the country, for the sixth consecutive year, Vivary keeps it for the fifth year, while Victoria has won it four times.

Cllr Richard Lees, Taunton Deane Council executive member for sports, parks and leisure, said: "We're, of course, delighted to follow up last year's success, and should thank those in the parks department who have worked so hard to create such excellent results.

"Wellington, Vivary and Victoria all mean a great deal to their local community and undoubtedly raise the quality of life."

Green Flag judges assess eight criteria - a welcoming place, healthy, safe and secure, well maintained and clean, sustainability, conservation and heritage, community involvement, marketing and management.

Grade II listed Wellington Park also retains its Green Heritage Site Accreditation, an English Heritage award for parks of particular historic interest - it is one of only seven parks to scoop the accolade.

It was deemed by the judges to be an excellent example of an Edwardian park.
