TAUNTON School’s John Rae Society welcomed Dr Chris Waller and a band of gifted musicians to illustrate and discuss the issue of ‘The Beatles, 50 years on’.
Dr Waller gave a colourful and discerning overview of the social and historical features of the 1960s, demonstrating how the outburst of popular music was a response to the stultifying effects of the 1950s.
Five musicians from Clifton College gave numbers at intervals in the talk from the Beatle’s collective and individual catalogues, including Dr Waller’s personal favourite Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
Dr Waller spoke about the challenges John Lennon experienced in his personal background and described how he had last seen Paul McCartney cycling down the seafront in Brighton.
