ARCHBISHOP Cranmer Primary School in Taunton is changing its name and becoming an academy in the next few months as stand-in governors try to improve standards.

The Interim Executive Board, drafted in to replace the previous board of governors, has decided to press ahead with the conversion after consultation with the community.

The academy will be sponsored by the Church of England’s Diocese of Bath & Wells.

A diocesan spokesman said: “The IEB has been working closely with the head teacher and staff since August to secure a rapid improvement in the school’s performance, bringing about significant progress in children’s achievement.

“In September, as part of the strategy to sustain the raising of educational standards in the school, the IEB requested the Education Secretary to issue an academy order.”

The board felt the “interests of the pupils and the whole school community are likely to be best served” by conversion.

He said it was likely that the school would become an academy in the spring or summer of next year when it will be called St James CofE School.
