MUSGROVE Park Hospital in Taunton has scooped £600,000 Department of Health cash to improve its maternity unit.

It will be used to upgrade the labour ward, where over 3,200 women give birth each year.

Improvements in the unit, in the Old Building built in the Second World War, include en-suite facilities and modernising the delivery room to create a relaxing and homely environment.

The whole project will cost over £1million, with the hospital committing significant funds to go with the grant.

David Allwright, Musgrove director of corporate planning and performance, said: “This funding will allow us to make substantial improvements to the labour ward which will improve privacy and dignity for women.”

Sarah Bridges, the hospital’s clinical director for the women and children’s directorate, said:

“Musgrove is committed to delivering the best possible start for women and their families.

“This much-needed funding will allow us to create an environment that complements the quality care provided by our staff and meets the expectations of the community we serve.”
