WATER mains work starts next week to upgrade pipes in Stoke St Gregory which are over 100 years old.

Diggers will move in on Griggs Hill on February 25 and the work is planned to take around a month.

Wessex Water bosses met residents and business owners in November to arrange ways to keep disruption down and said they will cover areas which have been dug up during the evenings.

They also promised that deliveries to shops and pubs will be able to to continue, and access to the church will remain.

A diversion will see traffic head from Curload Hill through Curload and across to Athelney before goiing through Stathe to Slough Lane, which leads to the bottom of Griggs Hill.

A Wessex spokesperson said: “This work will improve the efficiency of the water supply for future population demands.

“We aim to get the work done as quickly as possible.”
