Bliss nightclub closure forces Wetherspoons to charge entry fee, bosses say Bliss nightclub closure forces Wetherspoons to charge entry fee, bosses say

A TOWN centre pub says they have been forced to start charging an entry fee since Bliss nightclub closed.

Clubbers outside The Perkin Warbeck Wetherspoons pub, on East Street, Taunton, were stunned when they were told they had to stump up some cash to get in on Saturday night, a venue that previously never charged.

People vented their anger on Facebook describing the decision to charge an entry fee as ‘disgusting’ and ‘pure greed’.

Wetherspoons confirmed that there will be a £1 charge from 10pm on a Saturday night.

A spokesman added: “As a result of the nightclub [Bliss] closing, the bar is busier than ever, especially on a Saturday night.

“We have increased the number of door staff from six to eight to ensure staff and customers can enjoy a fun and safe evening.

“We appreciate that some people might be disappointed with the entrance fee, but we believe it is fair.”

The Coal Orchard Wetherspoons pub, on Bridge Street, is not affected.

Bliss nightclub closed in January this year.

Do you think the pub is right to make people pay to get in on busy Saturday nights or are they cashing in on Bliss nightclub closing? Let us know.

Every little helps Wetherspoons' profit and loss account! If punters don't want to pay either go elsewhere or stay at home.

Lots of pubs around the country charge a small entrance fee after a certain time of night, to cover extra security etc. £1 isn't a lot of money at the end of the day, and if people aren't happy to pay it, they can just go elsewhere. I personally wouldn't begrudge paying £1.

If people read it says that there is a £1.00 fee after 10pm. It might be a case of £2.00 before 10pm. It may also be a miss print from the SGC as you know what they are like.

£1 or £2 is nothing really, I was paying more than in the 90's but was £1.00 a pint back then.

In some respects it is 50/50 on if this is greedy or not. In respects you would not just have to pay for more door staff, but I would imagine that you would have to pay for more bar staff as well to be on duty.

Still glad I am of a generation who done all of their clubbing at the right age, rather than being sad men and women in their 40's plus trying to act like teenagers again.

After using such as The New Inn and the Old Inn, Bishops Hull, the Shepherds Rest, The Crown, Staplehay to mention but a few over a period of more than forty years I have never been asked to pay to enter a public house in order to have a drink. With this in mind it is a pity that this matter has received publicity since now it may have set a precedent for other licensees to follow in which case the ultimate winners will be the supermarkets.

It's silly that people are moaning about having to pay £1. The entrance fee was at least £5 to get into Bliss after 11PM so paying the fee that's being asked is nothing. People are soon to shoot down the bosses about the idea but they'll soon be complaining if it shuts down in the future.

I would hope the entrance fee is being put to good use - i.e floor cleaning (have you ever stuck to the sticky floors?) and sorting out those rank smelling excuses-for-toilets they currently have.
