A LONG awaited memorial to a Victorian businessman and writer born in the town will be unveiled next week.

The Langport Town Garden was renamed the Walter Bagehot Town Garden in December and a 2.4m board will be unveiled on Monday, and an appeal will be launched to raise money for the Langport’s Bagehot Memorial Fund to continue their work.

Barry Winetrobe, chair of the steering committee of the Langport’s Bagehot Memorial Fund said the board is to pay tribute to Bagehot as a Langport man and as an international figure.

He said: “We’ve been gathering Bagehot material, partly through generous donations, and want to create a dedicated interactive ‘Bagehot Centre’ to display this ‘Bagehotiana’ publicly.

Town councillors felt the garden would be ideal as it is opposite the building where Bagehot was born.
