TWO friends have had a sobering year as they went without alcohol to raise money for the Beacon Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital.

James Marks and Tom Boyd, from Hatch Beauchamp, decided to do their anti-drinkathon after a friend’s parent was treated for cancer at the centre.

The duo are 11 months into their challenge and Tom said it had been challenging in places to resistthe temptation in the first few months.

They added: “We want to raise as much as we can, so are open to any mini challenges you want to set us in return for your hard earned cash.”

The Beacon Centre provides radiotherapy and inpatient oncology facilities as well as day case chemotherapy and outpatient clinic facilities to around 1,200 patients every year.

The pair did a similar challenge 11 years ago when they had sober 21st birthdays, World Cup, Christmas and New Year but raised £1,000 for the NSPCC.

They will be celebrating their challenge success in the Ring of Bells pub in Taunton on July 27 and invite people to come and celebrate with them.
