UNPREDICTABLE weather conditions failed to stop hundreds of people flocking to this year’s Cutcombe Fete and Dog Show on Saturday.

Held at Wheddon Cross playing field, the event boasted traditional stalls, a barbecue, children’s races and live music from the Watchet Town Band, as well as more unusual entertainment such as ‘guess the name of the alpaca’.

Environmentalist, personality and Exmoor farmer Stanley Johnson opened proceedings with a humorous speech.

Early estimates suggest almost £3,000 has been raised for the village hall, Cutcombe First School and St John’s Church.

Sue White, chairman of the Cutcombe Fete Committee, said: “It went very well indeed. It’s a pretty successful fete.

“I think one of the biggest attractions is that we have a big marquee where everyone brings their cakes, vegetables, and flowers, so all local people can participate.

“We sell it all off at the end in an auction of produce, which is a really entertaining way of raising more money.

“It was great that Stanley Johnson could come along – people really liked him and he was very kind about Wheddon Cross and Cutcombe.”
