£3,000 church repairs fixed for free by Taunton Deane Deputy Mayor
7:00am Saturday 17th August 2013 in News
THE prayers of a vicar whose church faced a £3,000 repair bill were answered thanks to the generosity of Taunton Deane’s Deputy Mayor.
Dave Durdan stepped in to offer his services for free when the roof at All Saints Church, Taunton, started leaking, and says it was worth it because the vicar makes a mean cup of tea.
The Rev David Fayle said rain was getting into the church due to some cracked tiles, and was damaging the roof and ceiling in the gallery inside.
He said: “I got a few estimates and was told it would cost about £3,000 to repair.
“I was chatting to a woman about it and she said her son’s boss, Dave Durdan, could fix it.
“They arrived with a van and scaffolding, took down the broken tiles and replaced them, no fuss at all.
“Dave didn’t want anything for it, but we insisted on paying for the glue and tiles, which came to about £30 – which is a lot different to £3,000.
“It was really kind of Dave. You could say all my prayers were answered.”
Mr Durdan, district councillor for Ruishton and Creech St Michael, who is expected to become Taunton Deane Mayor next May, said he was delighted to help because he grew up in the area.
He said: “If you’ve had a good life it’s nice to put something back into society. I like helping out like that, and the vicar makes a very nice cup of tea.”
