Christiane's search for Somerset Swiss ex-pats a success
4:00pm Wednesday 21st August 2013 in News
WHEN 72-year-old Swiss ex-pat Christiane Greening-Knoepfli moved to Taunton, she set herself a personal challenge – of tracking down other Swiss people in the area.
The Swiss Embassy in London even helped Christiane in her quest to find other Swiss nationals, sending her a list of names and addresses of those living in the area.
And after months of writing letters and making phone calls, 40 Swiss ex-patriates, ranging from newborns to 90-year-olds, from Taunton and beyond, met to celebrate the country’s national day at West Monkton Village Hall, donning the red and white of the flag.
Hailing from the French-speaking part of Switzerland, in Geneva, Christiane and her English husband Derek Greening moved to the UK so Derek could pursue his ambitions of practicing law.
The couple’s daughter, Caroline Rainford, said: “When she moved to Taunton to be nearer us there was nothing here, and she’s very Swiss, and likes to meet other Swiss people.”
The next meeting of the Taunton Swiss Club will be held on November 26, at West Monkton Village Hall, where members will eat Raclette.
