Somerset roads to be maintained by Skanska after highways contract switch
3:20pm Thursday 22nd August 2013 in News
SOMERSET'S roads will be maintained by a Swedish company from the end of September.
Highways bosses yesterday (August 21) agreed in principle to switch their contract from Atkins Operational Services to Skanska.
Atkins was awarded the Highway Works contract – thought to be worth £25-30m per year – in 2010 but the firm has since sold its operational services to the Swedish company.
Bosses made a key decision and agreed that the council approves the transferral of the contract during a special cabinet meeting.
Cabinet members predict the move will invest in and improve the roads infrastructure, let others provide a service where they are able to do it well and at less cost, and ensure road quality is maintained.
