Video: Fury as promotional film for Wales shot in Somerset
A FILM promoting Wales - and starring heart-throb actor Ioan Gruffudd - was shot in Somerset, it has emerged.
The University of South Wales made the film, which shows panoramic views of the open countryside, but it has since emerged that the scenes were shot in the Mendip Hills.
The decision to film the 96-second clip, featuring Hornblower star Ioan - in Somerset has been branded 'odd' by a top Welsh politician.
Plaid Cymru Welsh Assembly Member Lindsay Whittle said: “It seems odd the university would choose a well-known Welsh actor to front their advertising campaign but made it in England.”
University chiefs commissioned an advertising agency based in Bristol to make the cinema commercial and a spokesman for the facility said the decision to film in Somerset was made to avoid 'typically Welsh rainy weather'.
Bob Smart, chairman of the Somerset Tourism Association, said: “We all know that Somerset can stand in for anywhere in the world if it needs to.
“If Wales is closed then we are more than happy to step in and we welcome the extra publicity. We have fantastic countryside, coastlines and everything you could need.
“We've had scenes in Broadchurch filmed here recently and we'll have lots of filming in the Glastonbury area next year too.”
