New Memorial Garden opened in Watchet
3:00pm Saturday 21st September 2013 in News
THE new Memorial Garden in Watchet Cemetery was opened by Sylvana Chandler at a ceremony last Saturday.
Mrs Chandler, who was the High Sheriff of Somerset for 2012-13, revealed a stone donated by Fine Memorials of Bridgwater that marks the entrance to the garden.
Watchet Town Council created the area ‘Watchet Memorial Garden’ so a memorial or plaque can be placed in memory of a Watchet person whose remains are elsewhere.
Previously, relatives have been able to request commemorative trees and benches.
Deacon Vincent Woods performed a blessing on the garden which also features four benches.
Mrs Chandler said she felt privileged to be invited to open the garden and take part in the event as it is close to her heart.
Her sister, Dr Katherine Wyndham opened the Watchet Ceremony almost exactly 20 years ago to the day on land originally part of the Wyndham estate.
Councillor Loretta Whetlor, Mayor of Watchet said: “This is a good day for Watchet.
"Now Watchet residents will have a special place to remember their loved ones buried elsewhere.”
Memorials can take the form of stone wedges to be placed around the circle or plaques to be mounted on the benches. For enquires about placing a memorial, contact the town council offices.
