MARKS & Spencer employee Madelaine Young has been presented with a ‘local hero’ award by actress Joanna Lumley.
Madelaine, 25, who works in the M&S store in Taunton, was chosen as the firm’s national Plan A Champion of the Year in recognition of her efforts to help the environment and her community.
As well as getting colleagues to use less energy, she has also set up a programme encouraging senior managers to take part in volunteer days with their store teams.
Madelaine said: “It was a fantastic surprise to win the award.
“I’m really passionate about trying to make a difference and it’s been lovely to see so many colleagues supporting M&S’s environmental and community initiatives.”
Mike Barry, director of Plan A eco and ethical programme which aims to make M&S the world’s most sustainable major retailer by 2015, said: “The overall quality of nominations for the awards this year was outstanding, so our winners really are very special. As you can imagine, we’re very proud of Madelaine.”
