Shop owners hope to kick-start Christmas trade in Wellington
TRADERS are hoping a host of special offers will entice shoppers to spend their hard-earned cash in Wellington this Christmas.
More than 50 shops have joined forces to lure in some early festive bargain hunters throughout November.
Each Saturday in the month - starting this weekend - some 55 shops have special offers on in a bid to make business boom.
The idea is the brainchild of shop owners Sally Hooper, of Mad Dog in South Street, and Sam Parr, of Cloud 9 in Fore Street.
Sally said: “It started when I was thinking of doing it for my shop, then I considered getting the street involved but I thought why not get the whole town to do it if we can? It will be buzzing and will really get things going for Christmas.
“I think the fact there are so many shops involved shows we can keep it local and support our independents as well.”
The initiative runs until Saturday, November 30 and the end coincides with the town’s Christmas lights switch-on.
That day also marks the start of a Taunton Deane Council initiative to waive car parking charges on the four Saturdays leading up to Christmas.
It is all part of a plan to deter shoppers from travelling to Taunton and Exeter, instead encouraging them to do their business closer to home.
Sam said: “We find in the run up to Christmas people go in to Taunton to do their shopping.
“We would like to try and keep business in Wellington and kick start Christmas.
"People seem to be leaving their shopping later and later but I think this would bring a festive feel to the town.
“Visitors could be getting some good bargains too; there will be a variety of things on offer at each of the traders involved.”
Look out for red and green balloons outside shops from this Saturday (November 2). Each retailer taking part will be decorated outside.
