A MAJOR regeneration at Butlin’s could see the creation of up to 100 new jobs in Minehead.

The popular tourist resort has announced plans to replace some of its older holiday accommodation with a modern resort hotel.

The proposals will be on display next month at a public exhibition.

Representatives from Butlin’s and its development team will be on hand to discuss the plans with members of the public.

A scale model of the development will show the new one-and two-storey holiday accommodation approved earlier this year.

Butlin’s is expected to submit a planning application to West Somerset Council following the exhibition.

Julian Highfield, managing director for the Minehead resort, said: “We hope that members of the public will want to come along and view the plans for the resort hotel.

“Visitors tell us that they would welcome the flexibility and convenience of holiday accommodation in the form of a resort hotel on the Minehead site.

“We are proposing a character hotel that would appeal to those with preschool children outside the school holidays, as well as families during traditional holiday periods.

“This type of hotel has worked well at our resort in Bognor Regis and we think Minehead would also benefit from a modern resort hotel that will help to turn Butlin’s into an all year around destination.”

Work recently started on a £16million re-development to provide improved holiday accommodation on the southern boundary of the Butlin’s site.

Mr Highfield added: The resort hotel will complement this development by providing a greater variety of accommodation and an improved experience for our visitors.”

The two developments will maintain the number of bed spaces at the Minehead resort at around current levels.

The exhibition will be held in the ballroom of the Hobby Horse on Wednesday, January 8, from 1-8pm.

Minehead Chamber of Commerce chairman Graham Sizer said: “Any new development at Butlin’s that creates jobs and increases spend in the town has to be a good thing.

“When big investment is planned, it shows confidence in Minehead.

“Every other business operating in the town should be encouraged by this.”
