FIVE pupils from Wellington School received offers from Oxbridge last week. Ruth Aird has an offer from Cambridge University for classics, while the other four have offers from Oxford.

Bethany Kilbey follows her sister Jennifer to Oxford with an offer for geography, Mabel Whitchurch has an offer for classics, Katie Paul has an offer for biochemistry, and Adrian White has been offered a place for earth sciences.

Martin Reader, headmaster, said: “We are delighted with these offers, which are richly deserved by the pupils.

“The diverse range of subjects offered is indicative of the breadth of teaching we offer at Wellington and the academic rigour of all departments”.

Mr Reader singled out the classics department for particular praise.

Should they meet their offers, five students will have gone to Oxford, Cambridge or Yale in the last four years for this course. Mr Reader said: “Whilst some independent schools in the area have decided not to offer classics, the continued success of our students proves that they are enthused by and rise to its challenges.

“At Wellington School, we aim to support all our students in their university choices and guide them through the process so their expectations and hopes are realistic and achievable.

“It is so rewarding when these hardworking and dedicated students receive Oxbridge offers and these opportunities are within their grasp.”
