A MIX of family and starter homes and flats with a social housing element could be built on land on the outskirts of Minehead if planning permission is granted.

Developers the Williams Partnership submitted plans to build 71 homes and flats on a greenfield site off Hopcott Road.

They described the scheme as sustainable and plans include a range of detached, semi-detached, terraced houses and flats.

While 46 of the homes would be sold on the open market, the remaining five two-bedroom houses and 20 one-bedroom flats would be built as social housing.

There would also be 142 car parking spaces, 300 cycle spaces and some garages.

Developers also plan to have an equipped play area central to the site.

The homes sold on the open market would include 19 four-bedroom houses, 26 three-bedroom houses and one twobedroom home.

In its statement, the Minehead based company said: “The site is very well linked to the facilities and services available in the town, which can be accessed by walking, cycling and public transport.

“Those links would be enhanced by the proposals as a result of the pedestrian crossing, bus stops and cycleways proposed.”

In the design and access statement submitted as part of the application to West Somerset Council, the company added that the proposal followed the council’s identification of the site as potential residential development land.

They said: “The local authority is not in a position to demonstrate a five-year housing supply and the site is, therefore, being offered for outline application consent.

“The site will also provide potential access to the adjacent site facilitating future sustainable development in accordance with West Somerset’s Vision for Minehead.”

The district council hope to make a decision on the development by Wednesday, April 4.
