A man in his 20s has died in a Torquay house fire
Emergency services were first alerted by two members of the public who saw smoke coming from the property on Dunmere Road at around 6.20am on Sunday, February 9, and tried to get inside.
They were joined by an off-duty officer and a second police officer who were first on the scene.
On arrival fire officers, assisted by the two police officers, recovered the body of the man from the house.
The police officers attempted to resuscitate the man with the help of an off-duty nurse but he was later pronounced deceased by paramedics. Next of kin have been informed.
The police officers were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation and later released.
Police and fire investigators are now investigating the cause of the fire and a scene guard remains in place while the property is made safe.
Around ten 12 people were evacuated from their homes. The road was closed while emergency services were at the scene.
