So we are a wealthy country now!!! Money is not a problem?? Since when? Our country has been on the breadline for years now. Unemployment isn't falling it's just that we are all made to work part time. There is no money for caring for the young or the elderly, libraries, health, education etc etc but suddenly the government says we have plenty of money. Is it because the floods are starting to get closer to London? If finance isn't a problem why have we all been left to suffer for the past few years? It's time the councillors tell us where they are hiding all this money

I am so sorry for everything that is happening with the people where the flooding is now Cameron is involved hopefully things will happen for you all best wishes to all
I know this is not on any kind of scale to what you are all going though but because it has at long last been noted the volume of traffic coming though Hilly Park Norton Fitzwarren causing not only major traffic jams but driving very dangerously as well e.g driving fast, on pavements thinking of nobody but themselves. I rang the police and the council but nobody is really listening we have a primary school on the road being used as a race track and I feel its going to take one of those children to get knocked down before someone listens to me. THIS IS NOT A SHORT CUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you'll find that I was referring to the multitude of errors made by the 'journalists' responsible for reporting the news herein. You'd at least expect someone who is paid to convey the written word to be able to spell correctly.
As for my "sad existence", I've spent a fair amount of the past week or so ferrying residents of the Levels around, delivering food and other essential items to people who are unable to get out themselves and generally doing whatever I can to help.

The reason ,I picked up on your post, was that you said, in these posts, as well as the journalist, I agree that the journalistic errors are terrible, but what can one expect, it is only a Local Rag, read or looked at by only a few thousand, in comparison with the Taunton County Gazette, Which has far better Content and worthy News and Social Content.
I for one would be happy if the Mercury Bridgwater Content was Merged into the Gazette, and Published Weekly as one Publication.......
Therefore I am sorry for attacking your Post, and applaud your help for the Flood Victims.but, it was how I read it. There are others, they know who they are, who post useless comments, knocking the efforts of everyone who actually tries to assist situations , without ever putting forward alternative, points of views, or workable solutions, costed and feasible .

The reason that money is tight, and local Councils are having to make very difficult financial decisions is because, we as a Country are living of off borrowed Money, having to repay the tremendous Debt that, Blair ! brown , Balls - Up, Prescott, Harriet Harmon, and the Last incumbent of Labour, Milliband. Under their Watch, in Downing St, they Spent, spent, spent Money, like it was going out of Fashion, with no accountability, no thought as to who had to settle this Debt, when or How. They spent money like a kid in a sweet shop ,on a sugar fix............
Then, during Blairs Prime Ministership, the slick, smooth Git, sold all our Gold reserves for 25% of it value! after announcing to the Stock Exchange 2 weeks B4, just to ensure that , the Price fell even more, before selling the Gold, I remember, the then Chancellor " Prudence Brown" with his Fiscal Policies....
Why, we are having to pay now, is because the Countries Debt, is after 3 years, still only 30% recovered! we are still paying Interest, on the Debt left as the Labour Legacy........
I will say, that there must be a serious look at the International Aid Overseas Budget, but that is not connected with local Government Funding, but of course, in these hard times We need to look after our own first, our a Pensioners, our Disabled, the infrastructure of our Country, we are no longer the 4th richest Country in the World, we are recovering ,the Country is getting there, Post Blair, post the Bankers, which, caused some of the Financial Meltdown, but I do not accept, that they were responsible, it was Tony Blair, and his Chancellor Brown, who has gone back to Scotland, havn't heard from him. !!!!! I suppose he's waiting in the Wings for the Devolution of Scotland in dependants from England.
I say get on have your vote, Blair split the United Kingdom of Great Britain, with his decisions, the Scots and the Welsh, are welcome to their Independence, but as the Governor of the Bank of England said, " not with our English Pound, you want to break away from the Union, then be it so !!!!
Like your personal household budgets, government, local Councils even yourself, you have a finite amount of Resourses coming into your Budget, you then have to priorities, as to what you need to put at the Top of your spending list, then work down to the essentials, and the needs , and the Wants and then finally the luxuries, Holidays, new Car, bigger House etc.
Well as a Former Councillor, that is what every Council, has to set out each year, to provide the essential Services, without increasing the Overall Budget, whilst, taking into account the " Gerswin Formular" which, demands that every Council has to save 3% on the Previous years Budget. (facts) to be Accounted into the Annual Budget Review.
Then, after essential services are factored in, as everyone expects those Services to be Provided, the other costs are looked at in Great details, overall Spending has to produce a Balanced Budget.........Very Difficult, without making some very thought provoking and at times very lively Debate, between our own Conservative Councillors in SDC,
This, did'nt happen with Labour / Lib SDC, as they never produced their alternative Budget Formular to Council, just nit picked at our Balanced Financial report to Council, without ever in my 8 years, coming up with a funding Formular, as to how they were to achieve any of their Budget Alternatives........

Now, still things are the Same, Cllr Redman, a SDC , SCC & Labour Prospective M P for Sedgemoor /West Somerset, only this week in the local Newspaper is peddling the Same views about SCC Budget Cuts, deeming them as Savage, and unacceptable, But a With On Alternative Stratagem , as to HOW He would fund, in able to provide the Services he wishes to retain.... ????? they have No Idea.......!!!!!! It's all Wind And Fire!!! Electioneering, speaking to their Electorate so they are seen to be doing something !!!! When in Fact they are inept.....Useless, of course I would say that. And I do, without fear of being Contradicted. They know a I am Correct, in this matter.
I would urge the members of the Sedgemoor Public, to attend Council meetings, both Town and District, just to listen to those you have Elected to Speak on your behalf, most do not even bother to enter, into any Agenda
Item, debate matters, argue Points. Etc..........
They are there because you Elected them, they should be accountable to you, some are a waste of time, even a Joke......we expect our Elected Councillors to be there, working for us the Electorate, I'm not bitter, as not being re-elected @ the last Election, as I and my fellow Conservatives were nudged out by Labour Boundary Review, which changed the Wards, in favour of Labour Territories, Households, no wonder Cllr Smedley, was pleased with the Changes, they knew the changes favoured the Labour Party, wards. All he was concerned about was as to what the Newly Formed Parish Wards were to be Named........,.This came about as a Labour Boundary review.....!!!

I would urge the members of the Sedgemoor Public, to attend Council meetings, both Town and District, just to listen to those you have Elected to Speak on your behalf, most do not even bother to enter, into any Agenda

Blue Owl (AKA David Preece, ex Tory councillor)

You frequently and consistently proclaim yourself to be "proud to be a Conservative".

Perhaps you would consider answering the following question?

This question is also posed to those apologists for New Labour within the Labour and trade union movement.

When asked, what she considered to be her greatest political achievement during her entire lifetime: Margaret Thatcher replied:

A) Introducing the repressive anti-trade union laws.

B) Defeating the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) after the bitter one year long strike of 1984/85

C) Tony Blair's New Labour Party.

We'll give you and your political allies in the other two main political parties a clue...

It was not 'A' : Introducing the most repressive raft of anti-trade union legislation in Europe.

it was not 'B': defeating the NUM

Which leaves 'C'...Tony Blair's New Labour party.

Yet Tories such as yourself continue the pretence of attempting to wage a political fight with the so called 'Labour' Party.

A New Labour party that, when in government for THIRTEEN years:

faithfully maintained Thatcher's repressive and undemocratic anti-trade union laws;

Waged a war in Iraq for mythical Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD's) in the face of two million marching in London to protest that the war should not go ahead in their name. All before launching into yet another war in Afghanistan.

Continued the Tory's Public Private Partnership (PPP) privatisation of the NHS in the form of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI).

I could go on.

However, I've confined myself to just a three of the incontrovertible issues that 'proud Tories' such as yourself share with the so called, 'New Labour' Party in your common capitalist political agenda.

A recent conference of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) discussed and planned preparations for the biggest left of Labour electoral challenge since World War Two.

Former Socialist Party councillor Dave Nellist, chairing the conference, laid out the ambitious plan to stand 625 candidates as 'anti-cuts beacons' for working class people in the May 2014 elections. This scale is necessary to attempt to break the media blackout of anything beyond the parties of capitalism. The hall was buzzing when it was revealed that already 400 people have been identified as potential candidates with two months of the nomination period left.

The millionaires and billionaires have their three main parties of cuts and austerity...

It's time for a new mass party of the millions!

Don't just angry get organised...

Open letter to Blue Owl (AKA David Preece, ex-Tory councillor) and all serious opponents of the unelected Con-Dem coalition's austerity programme.

You frequently and consistently proclaim yourself to be "proud to be a Conservative”.

You also spend much time and energy attempting to emphasise the political ‘differences’ between the Tory Party and the so called ‘Labour’ Party, much to many peoples' bemusement.

Perhaps you would consider addressing the following question?

This question is also posed to those apologists for New Labour within the Labour and trade union movement.

When asked, what she considered to be her greatest political achievement during her entire lifetime; Margaret Thatcher replied:

A) Introducing the most repressive anti-trade union laws anywhere in Europe

B) Defeating the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) after the bitterly fought year long strike of 1984/85

C) Tony Blair's New Labour Party.

We'll provide you and your political allies in the other two main political parties a bit of help in answering this...

It was not 'A' : Introducing the most repressive raft of anti-trade union legislation in Europe.

it was not 'B': defeating the NUM.

Which only leaves 'C'!

indeed; you were absolutely correct if you answered 'C'...Thatcher regarded her greatest political achievement to be the creation of Tony Blair's New 'Labour' party!

Yet, Tories such as yourself continue the pretence of attempting to wage a political struggle with the so called 'Labour' Party. To be fair to you, this political 'charade' is also conducted by the so called 'Labour' party. This is an increasingly difficult task for them to conduct with any credibility, as they continually commit themselves to endorsing and supporting Con-Dem policies such as privatisation of the Royal Mail and the continuing Public spending cuts.

This would be the same New Labour party that, when in government for THIRTEEN years:
faithfully maintained Thatcher's repressive and undemocratic anti-trade union laws;

This would be the same New Labour party that, when in government for THIRTEEN years:
waged a war in Iraq for mythical Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD's) in the face of two million marching demonstrators in London who protested that Bush and Blair’s war would not be prosecuted in their collective names. And all this was before launching into yet another war in Afghanistan.

This would be the same New Labour party that, when in government for THIRTEEN years:
continued the Tory's Public Private Partnership (PPP) privatisation of the NHS in the form of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI).

I could also raise the fact that the New 'Labour' government created and introduced academies in their bid to privatise education, but I won't dwell on this.

I should also briefly mention that the so called New 'Labour' government introduced the hated university tuition fees, something even the previous Tory government didn't have the confidence to introduce.

I should of course also not forget to include the fact that at one point the arch-Thatcherite, Rupert Murdoch threw his sun 'newspaper's' weight behind Tony Blair's New 'Labour' party, and that at a later date the so called New 'Labour' party received more from corporate donations than it received in trade union funding, leading many to conclude that 'he who pays the piper, calls the corporate tune. It was of course no coincidence that this occurred against the backdrop of Tony Blair's New 'Labour' government reducing regulation of the investment banks and reducing corporation tax, to amongst the lowest levels in Europe, although this in some way remains academic as the corporations still avoid paying at least £120 billion EVERY SINGLE YEAR, whilst simultaneously claiming that there’s a public spending deficit, meaning we all have to consequently make ‘sacrifices’ and that we’re all in this together!

Let's not also forget the Milliband led New 'Labour's' unprecedented attack on trade unions by actually involving the police when a trade union (Unite) attempted to influence the 'Labour' party prospective parliamentary candidate (PPC) selection process!

It was with all this, and more in mind that a recent conference of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) discussed and planned preparations for the biggest left of Labour electoral challenge since World War Two.

It is time for the trade unions to break with New 'Labour' and begin to construct a new mass workers' party as a matter of increasing urgency!

When asked, what she considered to be her greatest political achievement during her entire lifetime; Margaret Thatcher replied: A) Introducing the most repressive anti-trade union laws anywhere in Europe [Laws that still remain on statute today; despite, or indeed because of thirteen years of New Labour government] B) Defeating the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) after the bitterly fought year long strike of 1984/85 C) Tony Blair's New Labour Party. This would be the same New Labour party that, when in government for THIRTEEN years: faithfully maintained Thatcher's repressive and undemocratic anti-trade union laws; This would be the same New Labour party that, when in government for THIRTEEN years: waged a war in Iraq for mythical Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD's) in the face of two million marching demonstrators in London who protested that Bush and Blair’s war would not be prosecuted in their collective names. And all this was before launching into yet another war in Afghanistan. This would be the same New Labour party that, when in government for THIRTEEN years: continued the Tory's Public Private Partnership (PPP) privatisation of the NHS in the form of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI). Blue Owl says...

Somerset Socialist Party, you can carry on with your Socialist views, you are a Minority Party, without the Support of the Union Members, who along with the other Unions, in the Public Sector, Teachers, T G W U. And the others, you are not happy that Milliband, is going to change the Way that the Unions, have the Vote to decide the Parties Leader, Milliband does not want to be controlled by the Unions, hence the Changes.
So now, you and your Unions, will bring our Country to a Halt in the Pursuance of your Gaols.
Bob Crow, only last week, brought Londoners to make alternative travel arrangements, where they could. Where not possible, those workers who were inconvenienced, lost a day or two work........But do you, or Bob Crow Care, do you Hell. As long as your Agenda, is met.
Baroness Thatchers treatment of Arthur Scargill, and the Miners, were like you today, determined to bring down the Government of the Day. I applaud Lady Thatchers Stance, as had she crumbled, the Dockers were set to join the Miners, bringing our Countries imports and Exports to a Standstill.
If you Socialist, think your Policies are Right For England, why is it that only your Labour Paid up Union Members, are your only supporters, and like myself, victimised in the 70's as a Member of the TGWU, when I opted out of Paying the Political Levies to the Labour Party, instead Opting to make the same payment to Charitable donation, the British Cellophane Ltd, Courtaulds Union Stewards, did 'nt like that, along with 60 or so workers who chose to do similar, we were single out by the Union Heavies, what should have been a confidential matter, with the Union was banded around the Factory Workers, so that negative comments were made to us.......That's why I am so against your Socialist doctrine.
We do not want Socialism in this Country, your thoughts, are out of Touch with the Modern work ethics, you are a Dinosaur, as are your Politics, if you think Your Policies are apt in Modern Britain, then why, in almost every Democratic, Country in the Western World has rejected Socialism !!!!!!?????????
