KEEN readers will soon be able to help themselves at Wellington Library after it closes for a month for new technology to be fitted.

The building, which will be closed from February 24 until March 31, will see new staff points, touch screen kiosks fitted and improvements to security as part of the upgrade.

Self-service technology will allow customers to borrow, renew and return books and other items, as well as check reservations and pay charges.

It is hoped the kiosks will reduce queues at peak times and free up library staff to help with customer enquiries.

Cllr David Hall, Somerset County Council’s cabinet member for libraries, said: “I have been delighted with the reception that the self service kiosks have received in other libraries across Somerset and I’m sure that the people of Wellington will find them just as convenient.

“Once in place, self-service will reduce queues at peak times and allow staff to focus on helping visitors get the most out of their library.”

As part of the makeover, the library, on Fore Street, will get a revamped entrance, updates signs, a new enquiries desk, re-fitted carpet and a general spruce up.

During the temporary closure customers can return and borrow items at any other Somerset or LibrariesWest Library, the closest being in Taunton.

Items can also be renewed online at www.librarieswest.org.uk or by speaking to a customer advisor on 0845-3459177.

Sue Crowley, library services manager at the county council, said: “Library users need to bring their membership card and PIN to use the kiosks.

“Anyone who doesn’t have a PIN, has forgotten it or wants to change it to something more memorable can ask a member of library staff.”
