DRIVERS were being warned of the dangers of speeding during a day of action in Wiveliscombe.

A team of cadets, members of a youth group and police officers were out in force in a bid to clamp down on motorists who speed through the town.

Alongside a road policing officer, they conducted speed checks at several 'hot spots' and offered advice to motorists.

Youngsters were also targeted as they are more likely to get into a car of an older friend and people were warned about texting or tweeting on mobile phones while behind the wheel.

PCSO Louise Fyne said: “The importance of staying safe on the road is high on my list of priorities and we all as individuals should be always aware of our own safety and the safety of others when using the roads, whether it is as pedestrians, when driving a vehicle or riding a bicycle.”

Volunteers also helped out at the Base youth centre at Kingsmead School, which is run by the In the Mix Project.

The teenagers helped to paint the building and also gave up their time to help with other community based projects.

In the Mix is a platform helping youngsters from Wiveliscombe and the surrounding parishes get involved in youth work under the stewardship of John Hellier, Nick Harvey and Paul Black.

Nick said: “It was great having the support of the cadets and we hope there will be opportunities to work with the group in the future; they were a credit to Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

“What was particularly nice to observe was a together team who have some natural leaders who brought the group together throughout the day.”
