Travellers occupy Firepool site

First published in News

TRAVELLERS are currently occupying the site of the former market at Firepool in Taunton.

Several caravans were spotted arriving at the site near Priory Bridge Road yesterday (February 26).

A spokesman for Taunton Deane Council said: "The council is aware of the travellers on our Firepool site.

"We have served notice to quit on the travellers and will pursue the necessary steps to clear the site as soon as possible."

After around 10 years & £10m of taxpayers money we have achieved... a relocation for Viridor (from 200 metres away!), a low-grade residential development and a gipsy site!!!

Well done TDBC/John Williams/Taunton Vision/Project Taunton. You should be very proud of yourselves !!!!!!!!!

Sorry not allowed to label a certain of the Southern Irish comunity as wasters even if they are not wanted in Ireland.
No before you say they are not Gypsies or Romanies.

They are the same lot who came here last year. I have to say, having spoken to them both times most days i have no issue. And, i am opposite them. I obviously don't condone what they do or how they go about things but how can it be changed? All i know is that old cattle market site is a massive waste of space and money and the council should be ashamed of themselves. Who the hell wants riverside cafes etc in these times? The should be brave and look again at these plans just to get something built there! Even houses? Anything but the mess that has been there for years!

If they leave the site as they found it I will be very suprised but we could always hope they are the decent travelers that folk talk about.

Its better than them being in the park.

Do the previous comments suggest anything about the "decency" of the folk in Taunton already?
Here we have a large, desolate, concrete space which no one else has the wherewithal to use. Why shouldn't they camp there? I presume they're going to buy their food from local businesses.
And if they do leave rubbish, is it any wonder if this is the first response they get from other people? You can't kick a dog and then bellyache if it poops in your yard!

If they are the same lot as last year, lets hope the council put the bill somewhere safe for the clean-up so it can be given to them whilst they are passing through

FreeSpeech? Does the above comment make any more coherent sense after it's been translated into English or indeed any other recognisable language?

I drove by the travellers site this morning. They are occupying a small space in a huge wasteland. Everything looks very neat and tidy.
