A COMMEMORATIVE memorial dedicated to those from the town who gave their lives in both world wars is coming to life.

The Watchet Remembrance Project Group visited Wells Cathedral Stonemasons last week to see how the memorial is getting along. They were given an insight into the processes taking place to let the group bring the memorial home to Watchet.

Sara Summers, WRPG archivist said: “They are doing a fantastic job and the stonemasons are so talented, the detail they are adding is truly amazing.

“We owe them a debt of gratitude for the quality of work they are producing and for bringing our visions alive.

“This unique memorial will be one off.”

The initial drawing of the memorial, by Roxy Towells is now being transformed into the sculpture.

Sara added: “The whole group could not contain our excitement when we saw the magnificent works the Stonemasons are doing.

“We are sure that all of the people who have donated to the WRPG will be pleased with the memorial when they see the finished article.

“We will be issuing updates for everyone to keep the community in touch with the memorial’s progress.”

The Memorial will be unveiled at a special Unveiling and Dedication Day on June 28 this year.

The 56 names of the fallen will feature on the stone, and will, be commemorated together for the first time.

Local youth groups and children who helped towards the design will present some of their poems and songs.

Family members of the fallen will be able to lay wreaths after a special ceremony taking place on the day.

Anyone who is interested in the unveiling day or who would like to help is invited to attend the update meeting at the Methodist Schoolroom in Watchet on March 4 at 7.30pm.
