WIMBLEBALL will be one of the lakes hosting the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships.

The trout fishing season has begun in spectacular style at the lake with a number of fish over 3lbs and John Glanfield landing a rainbow of 3lbs 12oz on a Poodle.

Staff say the weather is playing a key role, increasing water temperature and making the fish more active.

Wimbleball has permission for an anglers’ car park close to the pontoon and there will be more fish stocked than in 2013.

A new member of fishery staff also joins the team.

Sam Marshall who has worked on the River Test in Hampshire and studied Sport Fisheries management for four years is the Countryside and Angling Warden.

He said: “This is a big year at Wimbleball with both the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships and South West Lakes Trust Best of the Best Competition.”

The week-long Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships take place from June 2 – for details email Sam at ExmooeCW@sw lakestrust.org.uk or call Wimbleball on 01398-371460.
