KICK-BOXING champion Jacob Riva was a winner for his sporting achievement.

He was among those recognised at the 2014 Pride of Somerset Youth Awards.

Jacob, 11, of Ilchester, has achieved a number of silver and gold medals in kickboxing competitions across the country.

In 2012 he won a silver medal in the world championships in Spain but this year he and his club, Infinity Martial Arts, went to the Sport Kickboxing Association World Championships in Cyprus where his team gained a silver.

While he was there, he went one better, facing opponents from around the world, winning gold in two Freestyle events and finishing first in his age group to become under-13 World Champion.

The awards are run by the Rotary Club of Taunton, your Somerset County Gazette, Bridgwater Mercury, Chard and Ilminster News, Burnham and Highbridge Weekly News and local radio station BBC Somerset.

A prize fund came from sponsorship from the Rotary Club, Avon and Somerset Constabulary, Somerset Cricket Museum and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

Certificates were presented at Somerset College’s conference centre in Taunton, which was provided free by the college.
