A SOMERSET teenager was ‘totally amazed’ after being named National Cadet of the Year 2014 at an awards ceremony.

Adam Evans, from Hambridge, came up trumps after winning the St John Ambulance’s two-day competition at Sedgeley Park Police Training Centre, which saw the youngster battle it out against 30 top cadets from across the country who all took part in tough tasks to win the prestigious award.

“I came into the competition with no expectations and I’m totally amazed to have won,” said Adam, who volunteers at St John Ambulance’s Taunton|Unit.

“Everyone here has worked so hard over the weekend and I’ve met some truly inspirational people. It feels like there are no winners or losers – we’re all winners.

“I’m so proud to have the opportunity to represent SJA cadets from across the whole country, it’s really quite humbling.

“I can’t wait to get started properly and I already have some ideas that I want to put forward.”

Adam, 17, who also won a Pride of Somerset Youth Award this year, will now get the chance to represent St John Ambulance Cadets at high profile events over the coming year.

Wendy Human, director of Charitable Initiatives and Training for St John Ambulance, said: “First aid is an important skill for people of all ages to learn. We’re thrilled that Adam will be representing our young volunteers for the next year.

“He demonstrated a clear understanding of the importance of first aid and will act as an excellent ambassador for this message.

“His support will help us to encourage more young people to learn some basic life saving skills and be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.”

The Cadet of the Year competition includes a wide range of subjects, including communication, team work, presentation, media and social skills.
