THE South-West Lakes Trust has received a royal endorsement for the second time in five years.
Gaining the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Sustainable Development division, the recreational and environmental trust won the accolade as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Evelyn Stacey, chief executive of the charity, said: “We’re thrilled to have gained such high level accreditation for a second time in a competitive situation.
“Every employee, volunteer and trustee has had a hand in our success and can share this marvellous award with pride.
“It’s also a great reflection of the skills and commitment of our local partners and contractors across three counties.”
The Queen’s Award was given to the charity for “undertaking initiatives directed at sustainability”.
The citation adds: “Through implementing a development and procurement plan it has reduced fossil fuel usage, reduced leaflet printing, installed technology for efficiently drying wetsuits, and invested in solar power for heating water and fuelling a ferry.
"It has increased populations of endangered species and improved habitats at its sites.
“It has established educational and outreach activities to empower schoolchildren and people with reduced ability to explore natural and historic locations, and, through work experience, advanced employment prospects of disadvantaged groups."
Recognised for ‘Sustainable Woodlands’, the company has commissioned a plan for conserving ancient monuments.
Keith Bungay, chairman of the SWLT, said: “What a wonderful achievement for the team.
“Undoubtedly, the fundamental challenge for the Trust since its inception has been to sustain the balance between providing for public access and recreational opportunities, and conserving the many natural and cultural delights to be enjoyed on the 50 sites across the South-West for which it is responsible.
“To have received Royal recognition for a second time is the icing on the cake.”
